Helping People Through the Power of Animals

Our partnership with Assistance Dogs Australia highlights the power that animals have to be able to help people.

Assistance Dogs Australia train and place unique dogs with Australians in unique situations.

Assistance Dogs, which are given for free, help provide increased independence, self-esteem, improved health and relationships to individuals and families - resulting in stronger and more successful communities.

Assistance Dogs Australia currently train dogs that specialise in support for people with a physical disability, autism or PTSD.

With your help, PETstock Assist are proud to have sponsored Assistance Dog Tai and pup in training, Honey.

It costs more than $40,000 to raise an Assistance Dog.

PETstock Assist & Assistance Dogs Australia partnership

Assistance Dogs Australia is a valued national partner of our charity, PETstock Assist. Lara Shannon, dog behaviourist and Pooches at Play host, explores the work of this incredible not-for-profit organisation and the impact of their partnership with PETstock Assist.

Meet Honey our sponsored pup

Our last fundraising campaign and ongoing donations from PETstock team members to Assistance Dogs Australia, make sponsoring a puppy like Honey possible.

We asked Honey some important questions so that we could get to know her more.

  1. What is your favourite thing to do with your puppy raiser, Sharyn?
Play with my fluffy toy flamingo (from PETstock!) while grabbing Mums legs so she can’t go anywhere and has to play too.

  2. What’s the most impressive thing you’ve learnt to do already?
I love closing doors and drawers when Mum points at them and says Tip. Following cues is a lot of fun for me because it feels like a game, and I get pats and treats as a reward. It’s a pretty good gig, this Assistance Dog stuff!

  3. What do you do when you’re not learning all the things that will make you an Assistance Dog?
I love sitting in my wading pool, especially on a hot day, to watch the world go past.

  4. What’s next for Honey and where do you see yourself in five years’ time?
I can’t wait to learn what the grownups learn in advanced training. Then I can go on to help a child or adult with a disability to live as fully and independently as possible. I’m going to be busy and can’t wait!

  5. What would you say to someone thinking about donating to Assistance Dogs?
Do it, you’re helping an organisation that doesn’t receive government funding. Intelligent, specially bred dogs like me, take two years to train and become an accredited Assistance Dog. We’re then placed with clients at no charge. My grown up dog friends tell me that the lives of the individuals we help are radically improved by having a highly trained, loyal Assistance Dog. Please donate either money or time as a puppy educator or sitter.
